Steel re-bar or embedded steelwork in concrete will exist there in a
protected state for many, many years. The problems begin as soon as
moisture gets into contact with the raw, mild steel. The rusting begins
and with the expantion of the oxides in the rusting process, the
concrete splits and cracks. Water ingress then causes rapid damage.
Concrete can be designed for the repair of these areas using the
Migrating Concrete Inhibitor (MCI). MCI introduced into the mortar
during the mixing process will form a protective shield deep in the
cured concrete. Steel will be protected from corrosion for many years.
When a suitable masonry paint is applied to waterproof the concrete,
then both steel and concrete will be protected indefinitely.
It is good policy when repairing reinforced concrete walls to repair
with a like for like system, that is concrete to concrete and not to use
say epoxy resin filler or similar. Dissimilar materials expand and
contract at different rates and so quickly loosen and fail. |
